Twelve years since 9/11: A reflection

Today is September 11, twelve years since the events of 9/11. For many of us as administrators and faculty, memories of that day are clear and fresh. As a New Yorker at the time, everyone around me knew someone who was in or near the towers that morning, and many of us knew someone who was lost. And my city was forever changed. But at the remembrance ceremony on campus today, I was also very aware how young the students around me were 12 years ago, and how different, or fuzzy, their memories are from that time, especially if they grew up far away from NYC. What did today’s ceremony, so important to me, mean to them? I believe it is important to remember and honor those lost, and it will remain a poignant day for me. But we need to think about how to keep the lessons learned during that time—service, care for one’s neighbors, kindness, generosity, and the importance of living life to its fullest—alive for our students today and tomorrow, rather than expecting them to share our memories.

To our students reading this blog, please share your thoughts below. What are the lasting messages of September 11 that you will want to continue to honor for years to come?

Seniors - Start Your Engines...

It may still be beautiful out....   and we may still be trying to hold on to the fleeting sunlight that still shines post 6pm, but there's no doubt about it - summer is officially over and school has begun!  Regardless of your class year, there is a sense of excitement surrounding a new school year -  new opportunities, unknown twists and turns, and an undeniable optimism that this year's going to top the rest.  That optimism should be even more present in the minds of our seniors - the students who hopefully have navigated the culture, taken advantage of the opportunities, and challenged themselves to exceed their own expectations here at Hofstra.  Well Seniors - you're not done yet!  Your final year at Hofstra should be filled with an ambition to figure out the next step, a nostalgia to take advantage of those fleeting college opportunities you can only get here, and a dash of "Last Time" traditions.  The Office of Student Leadership & Activities has a few things up our sleeve to make sure you are fully prepared for your transition out of the college world and into whatever world you step into next.

First, make sure you are ready for life after college by attending our monthly Senior Seminars Backpack to Briefcase Series, which offer our seniors an opportunity to develop skills that will ease their transition from university life to their post-Hofstra endeavors.  This Seminars, focusing on both professional and personal competencies, are meant to be an avenue that encourage seniors to engage, reflect, and discuss various senior-related issues connected to their transition.  Topics range throughout the year from Cooking classes with Lackmann, Apartment Hunting Tips, Managing your Budgets, Credit Card Debt, Negotiating Job Offers and Benefits, and more!  Last year's seniors said the Series "... brought to light real priorities in your fleeting months as a Hofstra student.  Whether a job or grad school or still undecided, these sessions helped me realize all the things I didn't know I wasn't prepared for... then guides you in preparing for them."  -- Mike '13.

The Senior Seminars are open to all graduating seniors - attend as many as you can.  The more you attend, the more chances you get to win a Hofstra Diploma Frame or Senior Week tickets.  The opening reception of Senior Seminars is Thursday October 3rd, 6:15pm in SC Plaza West.  Come to hear more information and get the calendar!

Before jumping headfirst into your transition, how about enjoying your time a little more at Hofstra!  Fall Festival is quickly approaching and applications for this year's King and Queen Showcase are available at http://www.hofstra.edu/StudentAffairs/StudentActivities/stdact_traditions.html!  Court applications are due Monday September 16th at 5pm in OSLA (260 SC).  The Court that is selected will showcase their love for Hofstra at the King & Queen Showcase on Friday September 27th at 8pm in the Playhouse.  All students are encouraged to attend and cast their vote for this year's Hofstra King and Queen.  The winners will be crowned at the Vibe Live Concert, during Fall Festival, Saturday September 28th.

And finally, when all is said and done - and the year is winding down - don't forget to join in on your final collegiate experience by taking part in Hofstra's Senior Week (coming this May)!  More information will be available about this amazing farewell to our seniors at www.hofstra.edu/osla.

Although summer has ended - the new year at Hofstra has just begun!  Whether you are here for the first time, or starting to think about your final moments in college - take advantage of all Hofstra has to offer this year!  And on behalf of the Office of Student Leadership & Activities - Best of luck and enjoy the ride!

Join Me--Commit to the Code

What I love most about the start of the academic year is that it marks a new chapter in the history of this great university.  Hofstra's history, not unlike that of countries around the globe, was shaped-and continues to be shaped-by political, economic, cultural, social, and technological forces.  History can be described as a living textbook: Each day adds a new page, and I expect each of you to contribute to Hofstra's history book.  Most of the time, you will do so without even thinking about it.  At other times it requires your active participation.  Today, I am asking you to act.  Stand up and make a personal commitment to the Hofstra University Honor Code.  Yes, I too, am asking you to "Commit to the Code."

As a member of this community, I value the exceptional education our students receive, in and out of the classroom.  Moreover, I am privileged to work at an institution with a mission that promises to "provide a quality education . . . in an environment that encourages, nurtures, and supports learning through the free and open exchange of ideas, for the betterment of humankind . . . Academic excellence guides everything the University undertakes."  I trust that your Hofstra education will not only prepare you for the future, but will fuel your search for both purpose and meaning.

There is no doubt that we are at a pivotal point in our history, as Hofstra is a school on the move.  Join me in making Hofstra not only known for academic excellence but as a place that has a granite-like foundation in academic and personal integrity among all its members--"Commit to the Code."

Best,

Confessions of a (Once) Undecided Student

Are you feeling pressure to choose a major? Relax!  Lots of us felt the same way, including me! Throughout my college experience, I have changed my major a few times. When I first entered college, I declared a major in Music Education. Once freshman year had finished, I realized that music theory and I had to part ways.  I remember feeling completely lost and hopeless as I went into my sophomore year.  I decided to take a bunch of elective classes to give myself a break from the craziness of selecting a major. One of those classes happened to be an Introduction to Psychology course. That was it. I had finally found a field that encompassed all of my passions into one major! With a degree in psychology, I intend to earn my Ph.D. and go on to conduct research involving music and its benefits with children living with autism.  The year I spent studying music did not go to waste; I simply became a music minor!

In my first year of college, if I had gone to the Career Center, I may have found psychology sooner than I did on my own. This month The Career Center is offering a workshop series, “No Major, No Problem.”  This is something I wish I had when I was undecided! You will be able to converse and exchange ideas and interests with peers experiencing exactly what you’re experiencing. You will learn so much from each other and from the presenters, which will definitely ease some of your anxieties!
Trust me, it seems like a lot to think about at first, but you will find your way. There are plenty of resources on campus and people to guide you so you don’t have to do it all on your own! Go to this event and get the help you need.  As a senior happy in her major, here is my advice:  remember to stick to what you love, don’t be afraid to try something new, ask for help, and learn about yourself!

House of Leadership

House of Leadership

I have yet to obtain a degree, although I am working on it as we speak
But even in my position I can create philosophies
My own expression of truths on particular subject matters
And today leadership will receive my Aristotle type manners
It is more than a word, more like a house of action
Because there are different levels to ensure the owners satisfaction
But not every viewer can obtain a key, unless you’re willing to listen carefully
Pretend I am your realtor, only for a few minutes and if you like my offer we’ll be in business
Step through the golden door, and don’t be blue,
Passion the first floor I’ll walk you through
Here, you can make your ideas concrete and when the sun shines you’ll feel the heat
Not from the rays, because the central air is blowing, but from your belief of your vision growing
You’ll probably have several and need to keep them in check so the organizational floor is next
File cabinets, planners, sticky notes and more can all be utilized on this floor
If you ask me it is an excellent place to spend your time because if you aren’t careful everything can end up out of line
The quiet floor encourages you to listen because when you talk all the time something can go missing
But if you like to talk and give instruction, the delegation room may be your persuasion
It is full of tasks that need to be done and someone needs to handle them
So when you are on the floor of responsibility be sure to stop by and face them with bravery
Come on, I know you’re not tired yet
The house of leadership does not encourage that
But if you need to take a break, be honest, because that’s an important quality
If you’re okay we’ll keep it going, the floor of communication can keep this party grooving
Just make sure you are clear about what you are saying and body language is an important part of the displaying
Speaking of displays have you noticed this pattern?
Not the wall molds, although those are impressive
I mean you following me through this lesson
We walked through the floors and you followed loyally behind
We were in sync as you kept the time
That’s an amazing attribute to receiving the key
Following comes often before you can lead
So now that you know the place, what do you think?
Was it what you expected or a bit bleak?
There were a few spots I didn’t show, but do not fret in time you’ll know
Something I love about this house is everyone’s perception of it is different
Every realtor will show you their own commitment
But since you’ve passed the test, I’ll pass on the key
Welcome to the House of Leadership
A never ending discovery

Welcome Week 2013: Find Your Route!

It is already the first of September and we are quickly approaching the first day of classes on campus. While residential upper class-men have been moving back on to campus, the new Hofstra students have been involved in a wide variety of events planned by our three summer Welcome Week Coordinators, Jennifer Grod, Elysha Johnson and Batson Xiang Li. As we are heading toward the end of the week they are proud of what has been offered and still excited about what more there is in the next day and a half.
We had a great weekend of END trips - people were all over Long Island and NYC participating in service trips as well as social trips with peers, welcome week leaders and administrators. The group seen here was on the Watson Adventure Wizard School END Trip with advisement dean Claudine Johnson. Today groups are on the Circle Line Tour, at a Yankees Game and handing out food at the Hempstead Train Station with Food Not Bombs, just to name a few. Friday was busy because we had a lot of workshop offerings during the afternoon but, we kicked the morning off right with a welcome from Hofstra's Provost, Herman Berliner and a great presentation by common read author Will Allen (pictured here with Welcome Week Coordinator Elysha Johnson prior to his presentation).  Yesterday we had a great afternoon at the Fitness Center co hosting(along with the Recreation and Intramural Sports Department) our first ever Let's Get Physical program. The event had
demonstrations from clubs and organizations along  with fitness class demonstrations and healthy food giveaways by Kate and Willy. We were lucky enough to even have a demo by our awesome Men's Basketball Team!
Today I was able to host (along with great student leaders) a wonderful event called Bingo for Books. This is the second year we have offered this program and the almost 70 new student participants were again excited to be winning Hofstra gear as well as gift cards for the bookstore to assist them in purchasing their school books! There were almost $450 in bookstore prizes along with many winners of our Hofstra gear (pictured here are all of our winners). I am looking forward to seeing everyone tonight representing their social letter fraternities and sororities at the Fitness Center between 8 and 10pm. It's one of my favorite events of the year. Right after that everyone will head over to Hofstra USA where we will have an illusionist, game night, DJ and a Ice Cream truck parked outside for folks to stock up on a sweet treat.
Hope you are enjoying the festivities of Welcome Week as much as I am. See you all at the Convocation on Tuesday at 11:20am for the official kick off of the Fall semester by President Rabinowitz.
