“I want you to be alive” sings Khalid and Alessia Cara on a
song titled 1-800-273-8255 which is the number for the National Suicide
Prevention Lifeline. In the United States, suicide has become a pressing public
health concern. Overall suicide rates for 10-74 year old have increased from
1999-2014 with the rates increasing in adolescents and young adult age groups. Every
year loved ones are left to deal with the unfathomable traumatic loss of more
than 42,000 people who have committed suicide.
It is important to note that of this number, 90% have a diagnosable mental
health disorder. Over half of that percentage is attributable to major
depression. Depression is a very treatable illness but it needs to be
recognized to be treated. And when people are treated 80-90% respond well to
treatment.
One of the most important things to know is that suicide is
preventable. At Hofstra University, there are many resources available to help
you or someone you know. The Student Health and Counseling Center at
516-463-6745 and Office of Student Advocacy and Prevention at 516- 463-6555 are
just a phone call away!
Join us on October 22, 2017 for the Out of the Darkness Walk
