Club Sports Roundup

The Hofstra Running Club attended their first ever competitive track meet on Saturday, October 24th, as they traveled to Queens to take on St. John’s University Track Club. Eight members competed in races ranging from 100m to 1600m. Gary Williams placed 2nd in both the 100m (12.0 seconds) and 200m (25.9 seconds), as did Ryan Connell in the 800m (2:07.4) and 1600m (4:49). For most runners it was their first competitive meet in a while, and was a great stepping stone for the competitive indoor season, which begins in December.

Hofstra Women’s Club Lacrosse participated in Stony Brook University's Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament on Sunday, October 25th. The Pride took on the host Seawolves in the first game of the day, battling their way to a fantastic 9-8 victory. Next up was NYU, who were also on the receiving end of the Hofstra ladies fine form, as Hofstra prevailed 8-6. Despite stellar defensive performances from Meghan Dempsey, Hope Knudsen, Liana Rodriguez, Jen Musumeci, Kita Wheeler, Alexis Sansone, and Kelsey Picciano, Hofstra fell just short of taking all three contests on the day, losing 8-3 to Fordham University. Goalie, Jazmine Gonzalez, was credited with a number of great saves, and the club was happy to play for such an important cause.

Hofstra Club Ice Hockey brought home their first victory of the Fall campaign, with a big 10-4 win over local rivals Columbia. Hofstra maintained a 4-0 lead for most of the first period before a valiant comeback by Columbia evened the score at 4-4. Hofstra retaliated in style with 6 goals courtesy of Guiseppe Chiaravelle, who recorded a hat trick on the evening, Darren Schwartz and Eli Vailancourt, who each managed two on the night, and single goals from John Voilkis, Jamie Esperto, and David Craig. The Pride out shot Columbia 55-19.

Hofstra Women’s Rugby Club saw their successful Fall season come to an end on Saturday, October 24th, with a tough quarterfinal playoff loss to SUNY Albany. Nery Mendez and Cheyenne Wong each scored tries and Margeret O’Callaghan converted a kick for the Pride, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to combat the Great Danes as Albany came out on top 62-12. Congratulations to the team on a great season!

Hofstra Equestrian Club added another successful outing to their season, this time traveling to Melville, New York, on Sunday, October 25th. Julissa Hoogeveen had a beautiful Open Flat round to start the day, placing 6th in a large and very competitive class. Kierstin Berwick had an impressive 4th place finish in Intermediate Fences. Julianna Foertsch had a great day; she earned 6th in Intermediate Flat and had a fantastic 2nd place ride in Novice Fences. Bridget McNamara also had a great Novice Fences ride, resulting in a 4th place ribbon. Kate Milford had another great beginner Walk Trot Canter round, resulting in a 4th place finish. The Pride’s Walk Trot division riders, Siobhan Stregis, Carrie Viscanti, and Angelina Purcell all ended the day strong - all three placed in their classes.

Hofstra Men’s Club Lacrosse faced rivals Stony Brook at home on Saturday, October 24th, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the opening minutes. After a slight dip in momentum, the Pride came out strong once again in the second half, cruising to a 10-1 victory.

Hofstra Roller Hockey Club competed in their first weekend of regular season contests with three tough games on Saturday, October 24th; two against Slippery Rock University and one versus Farmingdale State College. In the first match against SRU, the Pride fought their way back from a 5-0 deficit, as Nigel Grove netted two goals and one assist to pull the team within a goal. With the score at 5-4, Slippery Rock capitalized with an empty netter, ending the game 6-4.  In the rematch that followed, Hofstra launched out to a 6-3 lead, but Slippery Rock mounted a furious comeback and went on to win the nail biting game 7-6.  Hofstra fell to Farmingdale 4-2 in the third and final game, but the team showed tons of promise that they will look to build on for the rest of the season.

Club Sports Roundup

The Hofstra Quidditch Club played host to the annual 10-team Oktoberfest tournament on Saturday, October 17th, which saw teams from as far as the University of Maryland and Tufts University travel to Hempstead. The quality of play was high and the club had a rough outing that resulted in a 1-3 record on the day. Despite close losses to Quidditch Club Boston, Maryland, and Tufts, the Pride did manage a 190-120 victory over Rutgers University.

Hofstra Women’s Club Lacrosse played SUNY New Paltz on Sunday, October 18th, cruising to a 14-2 victory on the Hofstra Fitness Center field. Playing center, Alexis Sansone and Kelsey Picciano won the majority of the draws, which led the team to a possession advantage for much of the game. There were many goal scorers for the Pride, including: Alexa Arecchi, Alexis Sansone, Zoe Szczotka, Amanda Gross, Linnea Barbour, Jessie Allendorf, Maddie McDonagh, Stephanie Ruscio, and Kita Wheeler. The Pride were also helped by a stellar performance from goalie Jazmine Gonzalez.
Hofstra Women's Club Lacrosse celebrates their 14-2 victory over SUNY New Paltz.

Hofstra Men’s Club Lacrosse had a busy week that included a round robin tournament on Saturday, October 17th and a night game against local rivals Fordham two days later on Monday, October 19th. Rutgers and The College of New Jersey traveled to Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium for the tournament, and the home team managed a 1-1 record, falling short to Rutgers 9-2, but defeating TCNJ 9-3.  The Pride have had quite a history with Fordam in recent years with several nail biting contests, and this match-up was no different. Hofstra jumped out to a hot start, but struggles on defense allowed the Rams back into the contest late before the Pride were able to hold on for an 8-7 victory.

Hofstra Club Baseball hit the road to face UConn on Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th, and the Huskies were able to take two out of three from the Pride over the weekend. PJ Potter pitched a complete game letting up one run, three hits, and three strikeouts in the Pride's win.

Gearing up for their fast-approaching regular season, the Hofstra Roller Hockey Club traveled to Feasterville, Pennsylvania to hone their skills over the weekend of October 9th-11th. Junior Conner Hurwitz and sophomore Jordan Domnitch lead the team with two points each on the weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough for the Division 1 team to secure a win, as the Pride registered three narrow losses. The Division 3 team, comprised mostly of freshman, replicated the same record, but showed promise for the future as freshman goalie Chris Dellvecchia allowed just six goals in his first three collegiate appearances.

The Hofstra Equestrian Club was back in action on Sunday, October 18th, braving the cold at Olde Towne Equestrian Club in Selden, New York. Julissa Hoogeveen started the Pride off with a 6th place finish in Intermediate Over Fences, and later earned a second place ribbon after a beautifully executed Open Flat round. Charlotte Wood earned 5th place in Novice Over Fences and Julianna Foertsch earned a 4th place in the same division. In the Intermediate Flat division, Julianna Foertsch and Kierstin Berwick both placed, with a 6th and 5th respectively. Bridget McNamara had a great Novice Flat round, earning 4th place recognition. Emalia Hinden competed in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter division and earned 3rd place. Ending the day, Angelina Purcell had a great Walk Trot ride and was rewarded with a 4th place ribbon to cap off an excellent outing for HUEC.

Club Sports Roundup

Hofstra Women’s Rugby Club continued their fantastic form on Sunday, October 11th, with a 17-10 win over Rutgers, a team who the Pride had not defeated in over four years. The win clinched a berth in the Tri-State Conference Playoffs for the team. A regular on the scoresheet, Kim Tran again led the way with two tries, and Nery Mendez tacked on another to pace the Pride. The team will next be in action on Saturday, October 24th when they take on the University at Albany in the Tri-State Conference Quarterfinals.

Hofstra Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Club traveled to Rutgers University on Friday, October 9th and Saturday, October 10th to compete in a tough tournament bracket that included Rutgers, Columbia, and Yale among others. The Pride came away with one victory on the trip: a nail-biting 11-10 decision over The College of New Jersey.

Hofstra Men’s Ultimate Frisbee Club also spent some time in the Garden State, as they participated in the Autumn Sky Tournament in Mercer, New Jersey on Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th. The team came out of the gates quick in their first game against Stony Brook, going up 3-0 in the opening minutes. Stony Brook retaliated with a six-point streak, but big hucks from Hofstra’s Spencer Riggins and smooth offense from Colin Adams and Gabe DeOliveira took the Pride into half time with a 7-6 advantage in a matchup they would ultimately win, 11-8. Israel Marin’s toe-dragging catch in the far right back corner of the end zone was a highlight of the weekend.

Hofstra Equestrian Club had another great outing at their show in Selden, New York on Sunday, October 11th. Julissa Hoogeveen had two gorgeous rides in the Open Flat and Intermediate Fences divisions, pinning in her over fences class. Kierstin Berwick pinned in both Intermediate Flat and Intermediate Fences, and Maria Sorrentino had two fantastic rounds in Intermediate Flat and Novice Fences. Kate Milford had a successful Beginner Walk Trot Canter class, earning a fourth place ribbon. The Pride’s Walk Trot riders finished out the day on a high, which included a difficult mount for Angelina Purcell, who managed to maintain composure throughout a beautifully handled ride.
