It Was Worth It

All our preparation and hard work for Welcome Week paid off when first-year and transfer students and their families came to start the new semester. Upper class students were on hand to assist with move in and to ease the anxiety that comes with a new experience.

The campus was a sea of blue shirts as members of the Class of 2015 took over the plaza in front of Hofstra Hall. Our staff members and a photographer had to coordinate the group photo from the tenth floor of the Axinn Library with the hundreds of students on the ground.

Administrators were on hand to serve breakfast to new students at the Late Night Breakfast.

The highlight of Welcome Week was taking a great group of students to Little India in Jackson Heights, Queens as part of our Explore Next Door trips.

All of this wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our Welcome Week coordinators.  Dennis, Kaitlin, Francis and Liz - job well done!

What A Great Week!

What a great weekend for all students! It was nice to see commuters getting involved in all of the events that we had planned for Welcome Week. Shout out to the Welcome Week Staff for doing a great job! It was great meeting everyone at the commuter meet & greet on Thursday night, where we created mystery machines, and heard some amazing voices. The excitement continued when we welcomed back a former commuter student who just happens to be Cara Castronuova, one of the trainers from last season's Biggest Loser and two-time Golden Gloves Champion.

Not only was Cara a guest judge at Hofstra's Got Talent, she also welcomed people and signed autographs at the fitness center. While she was at Hofstra she was a commuter student from Elmont New York. But that didn't stop her from being involved on campus. She was active in her sorority Sigma Delta Tau and was a member of WRHU all while maintaining a good GPA. She's a prime example of an active commuter. Thanks Cara for coming! Hope everyone stops by Wednesday at 11:15 at our first event "Bring a Question, Find an Answer."

Calling All Comedians...And Those Who Love Comedy Shows

Hofstra will be hosting a student stand-up comedy contest in the Student Center Theater on Thursday, September 8, starting at 7 p.m. The GRAND PRIZE?... meeting Louis C.K. after his comedy show during Fall Festival Weekend, a one-on-one meeting with comic agent Andrew Russell of the APA Agency, and a spot at New York City's famous Caroline's on Broadway? Seem to good to be true? I promise it's legit.

Students who plan to audition should come prepared with a 1-5 minute routine. All you have to do is show up before 7 and register. Finalists will be chosen at this event and the Hofstra community will vote on a winner the following week. Find more information here: www.hofstra.edu/outloudaudition

Not a comedian? Come support your fellow students at this FREE, fun event that is sure to bring a lot of laughs. I know I'll be there!
