Club Sports Roundup


Club Ice Hockey faced off against Stevens Institute of Technology at the Dix Hills Arena on Saturday, February 23rd in the first round of the MCHC playoffs. Despite trailing 3-0 heading into the final period, the Pride would not quit. Andrew Gagnon started the comeback with seven minutes left, quickly followed by Antonio Binotto who tallied another goal to make the score 3-2. With 40 seconds left in the game, Vinny Cacciatore scored the game-tying goal to send the game to overtime. Binotto would be the hero for Hofstra, cashing in again in overtime to give the Pride a 4-3 victory and send them to the championship game.

On Sunday, February 24th, Hofstra took on top-seeded Fordham University at the Dix Hills Arena in the MCHC Championship. Again facing a late 3-2 deficit, Collin Ewald netted the game-tying goal to send the game into overtime. Hofstra was not as fortunate on this night, as Fordham prevailed 4-3 in OT. Despite the loss, it was a tremendously successful season for the club.  


Club Men’s Lacrosse hosted Sacred Heart University and New York University on Sunday, February 24th at Shuart Stadium. Despite holding a 5-2 lead in the second half, the Pride would ultimately fall to Sacred Heart by a score of 6-5 in overtime. Ryan Garry led Hofstra with 4 goals.

Hofstra would bounce back in a big way later in the day against NYU, posting a dominant 10-4 victory. Hofstra next travels to Monmouth University on Sunday, March 3rd for a round robin with Monmouth and Ramapo College.

Club Women’s Lacrosse hosted Quinnipiac University at Shuart Stadium on Saturday, February 23rd, falling by a score of 10-6. Zoe Szczotka scored 2 goals for the Pride, while Allison Shamir and Mikayla Ruthig each added a goal and an assist.

On Sunday, February 24th, the Pride traveled to Sacred Heart University to take on the Pioneers. Despite 4 more goals from Zoe Szczotka, Hofstra would drop a 10-7 decision. Maddie McDonagh, Mikayla Ruthig and Sabrina Michael-Duncan each scored a goal for the Pride. The Pride are back in action on Saturday, March 2nd at Stony Brook University. 


Club Billiards hosted a tournament in the Hofstra Game Room on Friday, February 22nd. The club had 8 members in attendance, two of which, Zaviel Young and Andrew Scimlimpaglia, faced off in the finals. Young won 4-3.

On Sunday, February 24th, the club traveled to Baldwin Billiards for an APA League match. The team would drop a 9-4 decision despite wins from Zach Cedar and Zaviel Young.


Club Quidditch traveled to Rutgers University on Saturday, February 23rd for their first tournament of the spring. The highlight of the tournament was defeating the NYU Pigeons by a score of 210-20.

Club Climbing climbed at Brooklyn Boulders on Saturday, February 23rd with 31 members in attendance. The club will next visit the Cliffs at Long Island City on Saturday, March 2nd

CLUB SPORTS STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Erica Baker-Women's Club Lacrosse-Senior-Psychology-West Chicago, Illinois

Despite never having played lacrosse before coming to Hofstra, Baker has developed into a shutdown defender for the Pride, anchoring a strong Hofstra defense in two close losses this past weekend.

Club Sports Roundup


Club Ice Hockey hosted Columbia for their final regular season game on Friday, February 15th at Northwell Health Ice Center. Hofstra netted three first period goals and never looked back, winning the game by a score of 11-3. Andrew Gagnon’s hat trick led the scoring for the Pride, who also received goals from Joe Grice (2), Antonio Binotto (2), David Frattaroli (2), Eli Vaillancourt (1), and Daniel Harchut (1). Hofstra returns to action for the first round of the MCHC playoffs on Saturday, February 23rd, taking on Stevens Institute of Technology at 1:45pm at the Dix Hills Arena.




Club Climbing visited the Gravity Vault in Melville on Friday, February 15th for a climb. The club members focused on bouldering. Four members took a belay class and became certified.




On Saturday, February 16th at Brooklyn Boulders Gowanus, two members participated in a bouldering competition. Danny Pires placed 3rd in the beginner division.


Club Billiards had a match at Raxx Pool Room on Sunday, February 17th. Tim Murphy was the lone victor on the day as Hofstra dropped the contest 10-4.

Club Sports Roundup

Club Roller Hockey traveled to Corona, California to face-off against several west coast teams during the January intersession. The team posted a 2-2 record on the trip, notching wins over Long Beach State (5-1) and UCLA (10-4), while dropping games to Cal Poly Pomona (5-2) and the University of California (7-3). Andrew Gagnon led the team in scoring with 8 goals on the trip.

The team was next in action from Friday, February 8th through Sunday, February 10th at a tournament at Choice Inline in Sewell, New Jersey. The club posted a perfect 5-0 record, defeating Drexel University, Lock Haven University, University of Pittsburgh, James Madison University and Virginia Tech. Collin Ewald scored 13 goals throughout the weekend and was named the “First Star” of the game twice.

Club Ice Hockey returned to the ice for the first time in 2019 on Sunday, January 27th against the Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point. In a game that was knotted at 3 after one period, the Pride exploded quick goals in the 2nd period on their way to a 6-4 victory. Andrew Gagnon and David Frattaroli each scored twice, while Joe Grice and Eli Vaillancourt each netted a goal. 



The team next hosted St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, February 1st at the Northwell Health Ice Center. Despite falling behind 2-0 quickly, Hofstra fought back and ultimately won the game 7-4. David Frattaroli and Joe Grice each netted two goals, while Collin Ewald, Zack Lamberti and Vinny Cacciatore each tallied a goal each. 



On a quick turnaround, the team next traveled to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point on Saturday, February 2nd. Zack Lamberti scored the first goal of the game for the Pride but ultimately King’s Point prevailed 3-2.

With a week to rest, the team hit the road to take on Columbia University on Saturday, February 9th. Hofstra jumped out to an early thanks to two goals by David Frattaroli, and a goal apiece by Antonio Binotto, Andrew Gagnon, and Chris Serio. Liam Hartenstein and Shane Griggs were solid in net as the Pride got back to their winning ways with a 5-1 victory. Hofstra returns to the ice for the final regular season game at Northwell Health Ice Center on Friday, February 15th against Columbia. 


Club Billiards won a close match by a score of 8-7 on Sunday, February 10th. Andrew Sciglimpaglia won his debut match, notching a shut-out.
  
Club Climbing hosted their first climb of the semester on Saturday, February 9th at The Cliffs in Long Island City. The climb had 40 participants and the highlight of the event was when two members engaged in harnessed tight rope walking. The next climb is on Friday, February 15th at the Gravity Vault in Melville, NY.

Collin Ewald-Club Roller Hockey-Sophomore-Mechanical Engineering-Sayville, New York

Ewald scored a staggering 13 goals in 5 games to help lead Hofstra to a 5-0 record at their tournament in Sewell, New Jersey from February 8th-10th.
