Last Call for Debate Volunteers!

TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

Soon the volunteer Debate Staff will be chosen. Have you sent in your application?

If not, we have posted some of the top reasons illustrating why it is so important that you take this opportunity to apply, below:

  1. It's a great chance to practice cover letters and resumes! One of the most important aspects of college is how it prepares you for life beyond schooling; and because so much of life after college deals with sending out resumes and responding to whatever postings may be available, this offers a great opportunity for students to work on preparing a resume.
  2. It's a chance to participate in history! No matter the location or position, members of our volunteer staff will be gaining the invaluable experience of ensuring the success of this year's debate. Though it is true that you forfeit your ability to attend the debate if you're selected for a volunteer position, please note that we aren't guaranteed to receive tickets from the Commission on Presidential Debates and even if we do, it would be a very limited number.
  3. When else can you get a behind-the-scenes look at how presidential debates are run? Building off the last point, Debate 2012 is not an event the comes along every year, or even every four. Hofstra was incredibly fortunate to host debates for two consecutive presidential elections, and it cannot be overstated how rare an opportunity this is. Volunteers can catch a rare glimpse of how debates are organized and how things are handled off-stage.
  4. It's a wonderful opportunity to build connections! As a Debate 2012 volunteer, you will be able to rub shoulders with members of the media, campaign staffers, pundits and more as you lend a hand at various stages of preparation.
  5. You're guaranteed a shirt! Speaking as someone who was on campus in 2008, I know that Debate swag is at a premium once the event nears. If you're lucky enough to get selected as a volunteer, you'll definitely be getting a shirt.
Many students have already applied, but there is still time! Applications for credentialed (Secret Service Clearance) positions must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. TONIGHT (8/3) in order to be considered! All others will be accepted on a rollings basis until Friday, September 7, based on availability.

To apply and for more information on specific opportunities available, please visit Pride-CMS, located under My Apps on the Hofstra Portal, my.hofstra.edu. Once you are in Pride-CMS, click on Jobs and Internships and then under the keyword search enter "Hofstra University Debate 2012." Here you will be able to view job descriptions, apply and review FAQ and volunteer expectations.
