The Career Fair is Only Two Days Away! Are You Ready?

Our Fall Career Fair is almost here! Join us on Wednesday, October 9th from 11am-2pm in the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex to meet with our 74 employers  who have part-time, full-time, and internship positions available!

Still not sure whether you want to go to the Career Fair? The answer is simple: YOU DO! You don’t have to be a junior or senior in order to benefit from all that Career Fairs have to offer – just look at our Path of Pride!

Step 3 of the Path of Pride encourages you to Research Careers. This can happen at any time, and what better time to get a jump start than your Freshman or Sophomore year? There’s really no easier way to do this than communicating with people who are currently working in the field! It might even give you an idea of what you want your career to be!

This leads straight into Step 4, where you can Begin to Make Connections. While you talk to employers about their careers, make sure they know who you are, too! Networking can open many doors, some you didn’t know existed. The person you meet your first semester at a Career Fair might keep your name in mind when a position at their company opens in your senior year—you never know!

If you’re a Junior, you’re probably nearing Step 6, where you Search and Apply for Internships. I don’t need to reiterate how much of an asset career fairs can be when looking for internships, but I will: they’re extremely valuable! Research the companies that will be represented before you come to the fair, and be ready to talk to them about the positions they’re looking to fill!

As a Senior, you’re between Step 6 and 7, either looking for an internship or Establishing Post-Graduation Goals and Plans. You’re nearing the end of your time at Hofstra, and you know you’re qualified and prepared to network your way to snagging a job for after you graduate! Get out there and show all these employers why they should hire you!

Still want to know ways to make yourself stand out on Wednesday? Come to The Career Center’s workshop on How to Work a Job Fair, TODAY (Monday, October 7th) at 4pm in The Career Center!

Are you all set for the fair, but just want one more quick check of your resume? We have extended our Quick Question Hours for you to do just that! Come in Monday October 7th or Tuesday October 8th from 10am-Noon and 2pm-5pm. Please note: There will be NO Quick Questions on Wednesday, October 9th.

You can also follow us as we lead up to the Fair by liking The Career Center on Facebook, tweeting @HofstraCareer, and using our new hashtag #HireWithPride! Good luck, and we’ll see you at the Fair!

Introducing Hofstra University’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter!

It is with great pride that we announce that the service club, Hofstra’s Hope for Humanity, has been officially accepted as a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter!  The club was established in May 2012 and has since grown to include over 150 members.  This Chapter will be the first college affiliate for Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County, and we are very much looking forward to this new partnership with them.

The four main focuses of a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter are building, fundraising, advocating and educating.  In the past month alone, we were lucky enough to go on three different build dates and have a bake sale; all while raising awareness for affordable housing.  Members have done hundreds of hours of community service since the start of the school year and we are looking forward to continuing this momentum.   Our next big event will be the Habitat for Humanity Walk-a-Thon in Eisenhower Park on October 13th.  In the coming months, we plan on helping with Hurricane Sandy relief and the E-Board will be attending the Habitat for Humanity Youth Conference in Washington DC to represent this newly recognized Chapter.  The club’s most recent accomplishment though, was coming in first place at Fall Festival for our Toy Story float with SGA and RSA.  We also host an annual Night Without a Home event in the spring, where participants sleep outside to fully understand why we do what we do.

Hofstra University’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter has many exciting things planned for this year, and we would always love to welcome new members.  If you are interested in joining or receiving more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at HUHabitatForHumanity@gmail.com .

Leadership in Action - Stand out amongst the crowd

Many of Hofstra’s departments and student organizations contribute great engagement opportunities to our community and it’s amazing to watch as our student leaders develop ideas that turn into successes around campus. With the fall semester in full swing, I wanted to pinpoint a few great opportunities for leadership development that The Office of Student Leadership & Activities (OSLA) has coming up soon. The first one is the Fall Leadership Conference, scheduled for Saturday October 19th. The theme of the conference is Stop Stalling, Start Engaging: Putting your Skills into Action. Whether an established leader, an emerging leader, or a student who hasn't yet found their niche, you will walk out with tangible take-a-ways of how to acquire specific skills and utilize them in leadership roles and daily living. Make sure to register here: http://studentvoice.com/hu/introduction. Students can email osla@hofstra.edu with any questions.

The Blue and Gold Leadership Series is a newly renovated program aimed at equipping students with opportunities to acquire and implement leadership skills to enhance professional competence while documenting achievements that can lead to career, service, or leadership advancement. The program prepares students to serve in significant campus and community leadership roles through development and training. Blue Leadership targets 1st and 2nd year emerging student leaders and runs for eight weeks in the spring semester. Each two-hour workshop covers different areas of leadership, including personal development, purpose and vision, collaboration, service, ethical decision-making, marketing your leadership, and multicultural competence.  Students must apply to the Blue Leadership program and applications will be available by mid-October. We encourage faculty and staff to nominate students as well. For students who don’t want to commit to a regular semester-long seminar, PRIDE a-la-carte Leadership Certificate Program is a great option!  Workshops are offered at varying times throughout the semester to allow students to develop leadership skills on their time. Participants must attend four sessions and engage in a few great programs offered throughout the Division of Student Affairs in order to receive a certificate of completion for this a-la-carte workshop series.

As a next step from PRIDE or Blue, the Gold Leadership program targets upperclassmen for an experiential leadership experience. Participants in the year-long Gold Leadership Program belong to an intimate cohort of student leaders that dialogue bi-weekly about leadership and interpersonal development. The Gold Cohort will continue meeting all semester engaging about their own strengths, weaknesses, biases, and vision; pinpointing the kind of leader they are, and articulating how they intend to lead ethically, competently, confidently, and openly in the global world after college. They are forming relationships with mentors from around campus, all of which are at the Director, Dean, or VP level, and in the coming spring semester, they are charged with mentoring the Blue participants, planning the Spring Midnight Run, and completing the program with a “Where I’m From; Where I’m Going” presentation. Whether during outdoor excursions, mentor meetings, service work, or deep discussions about leadership and purposeful living, the Gold students will exemplify an increased self-awareness, confidence, and ability to articulate their place in an ever-changing world. Sporting their Gold fleeces in an effort to brand the program, they walk around campus with their heads held high searching for new ways to better themselves and implement new visions while re-defining old ones. Armed with an understanding that leadership development is an on-going process that is never fully complete, these students will join an exclusive community of students who have participated in this comprehensive leadership experience.

Leadership opportunities are always popping up throughout the year – keep your eyes peeled for information about the Leadership Summit, Orientation Leader Info Sessions, Alternative Spring Break trips, Senior Seminars, and more! Contact osla@hofstra.edu and check out www.hofstra.edu/leadership for updates and opportunities.

10, 9, 8, 7 Days Until the Fall Career Fair!

10, 9, 8, 7 Days Until the Fall Career Fair!

That’s right, Hofstra’s Fall Career Fair is only a week away: Wednesday, October 9 from 11am to 2pm at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex! As of today we have 74 fantastic employers who have part-time, full-time, and internship positions available—and they want YOU to fill them! The Career Center is here to help you get the most out of this great opportunity, including answering some of the most common questions students ask as the fair approaches:

So… what IS a Career Fair?
Remember in high school where you went to the gym or a local conference center and saw different colleges lined up at tables waiting to meet you? For some of you, that might have been how you selected Hofstra! Career Fairs are a very similar process. You’ll come to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Wednesday, October 9th between the hours of 11am and 2pm, swipe your Hofstra ID, and enter to see and network with all of our employers!

What should I expect?
You will be meeting a great deal of new people, who will all be excited to see you and all you have to offer. See advice about how career fairs operate and what employers are looking for by visiting Candid Career here.  To see what a Career Fair at Hofstra is all about, click here!

How do I prepare for the fair?
We’re glad you asked! Come to our “How to Work a Job Fair” workshop on Monday, October 7that 4:00pm in The Career Center.  This workshop will teach you all the tips and tricks you need to present yourself in the best way possible! Two very important things to remember are to ensure you make a great impression by dressing professionally and bringing plenty of copies of your resume! Speaking of resumes, we encourage you to get yours reviewed by The Career Center staff during our “Quick Question” hours, Monday through Thursday from 2-4 and Friday from 11-1.

You can also follow us as we lead up to the Fair by liking The Career Center on Facebook, tweeting @HofstraCareer, and using our new hashtag #hirewithpride! Good luck, and we’ll see you at the Fair!

LGBTQ History Reception - hosted by MISPO

The Office of Multicultural and International Student Programs Office hosted the LGBTQ History Month reception.  Jason Schaefer, the office’s Graduate Student Assistant for LGBTQ Programs, was the host of the program and introduced the student speaker and our keynote speaker.

Alicia Phillips, The Pride Network co-chair and a third year student who identifies as transmasculine lesbian, spoke about her story and the ways to become involved with The Pride Network at Hofstra.  According to Human Rights Campaign, 92% LGBT youth say they hear negative messages about being LGBT, mostly coming from school, the internet and peers.  Alicia shared her personal experience of how her family was there to support her and how the negative aspects of her life and the hardships and her relationships with friends became better through time.   Alicia is highly involved with the LGBT community on campus and attempts to provide more education opportunities for the Hofstra Community to learn and be open about the LGBTQ community on campus and elsewhere.  Her goal is to educate future generations about this community in order to further promote equality.

Our Keynote speaker Carmen Vázquez is an activist, writer and community intellectual. Currently, she is the Coordinator of the LGBT Health & Human Services Unit for the NYS AIDS Institute. She is the former Deputy Executive Director of the Empire State Pride Agenda. She has worked hard to promote justice and not just equality.  Her motivational and inspiring speech was not to only promote and create an equal society, but one that justice prevails.  She requested everyone to be “seekers of justice”, to understand everyone that is going through hardships and defend their rights, because they are basic human rights.  Throughout the Multipurpose Room, the LGBTQ community was celebrated and acknowledged, and with this reception and the future ones to come, the Hofstra community will grow and learn and understand that beyond equality, we need justice.

My Paid Internship at HBO

My name is Elizabeth Tillman, and I am entering my 3rd year at Hofstra as a marketing student in the Zarb School of Business. During my sophomore year, I was selected to be a final talent pool candidate of the T. Howard Foundation, a nonprofit organization offering paid internships within the multimedia and entertainment industry to minority young men and women. Because of the T. Howard Foundation, I landed a paid internship last summer at HBO in Manhattan where I worked in one of their marketing departments.

Working with T. Howard and interning at HBO were some of the most enriching experiences of my life. At the beginning of the summer, the T. Howard Foundation held a comprehensive two and a half day orientation where we were able to meet fellow interns and media professionals from companies like Showtime, Discovery Channel, and more. The orientation consisted of various workshops and panels which gave the interns the opportunity to develop various professional skills, including how to network effectively, deliver a sharp elevator pitch and more. I was able to take the information from the orientation and apply it to my internship, which enhanced my overall performance. My supervisors recognized my professional sophistication, courtesy of what I learned from T. Howard, and they offered me another internship for the following fall.

The T. Howard Foundation has helped jumpstart my career as a marketing professional in the multimedia industry, and has given me a distinct competitive edge when I begin applying for jobs upon graduation. I encourage all diverse students to apply today to T. Howard to learn how the foundation will make a positive impact on their professional careers!

If you are a diverse student and want to learn about paid internship opportunities in the media industry, then come to the T. Howard Foundation’s information session tomorrow, Wednesday, October 2nd during common hour in Breslin 106.  See you there!
