It is with great pride that we announce that the service
club, Hofstra’s Hope for Humanity, has been officially accepted as a Habitat
for Humanity Campus Chapter! The club
was established in May 2012 and has since grown to include over 150
members. This Chapter will be the first
college affiliate for Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County, and we are very
much looking forward to this new partnership with them.
The four main focuses of a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter
are building, fundraising, advocating and educating. In the past month alone, we were lucky enough
to go on three different build dates and have a bake sale; all while raising
awareness for affordable housing. Members
have done hundreds of hours of community service since the start of the school
year and we are looking forward to continuing this momentum. Our next big event will be the Habitat for
Humanity Walk-a-Thon in Eisenhower Park on October 13th. In the coming months,
we plan on helping with Hurricane Sandy relief and the E-Board will be
attending the Habitat for Humanity Youth Conference in Washington DC to
represent this newly recognized Chapter.
The club’s most recent accomplishment though, was coming in first place
at Fall Festival for our Toy Story float with SGA and RSA. We also host an annual Night Without a Home event in the spring, where participants sleep outside to fully understand why we do what we do.
Hofstra University’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter has
many exciting things planned for this year, and we would always love to welcome
new members. If you are interested in
