Throughout the months of October and November students were
challenged to collect new socks that would be donated to the homeless
population in New York. This initiative
came to Hofstra University through the campaign led by Social Media celebrity
Kid President. Kid President has
encouraged schools, individuals, and communities to donate socks to a local
organization that serves the homeless population. According to Kid President, “Every night in
the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets.”
This year the Office of Student Leadership and Activities
encouraged students to work in collaboration with their organizations to
collect socks that we will distribute to the homeless in New York City during
the Midnight Run on December 3rd.
Through the hard work and
generous donations we are happy to announce that our student organizations
collected a total of 377 pairs of socks! We would like to thank the
organizations that banned together to make a donation as a group, particularly the
organizations with the highest total donation—Sigma Gamma Rho (60 pairs), Music
and Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA 85 pairs), and Delta Phi
Epsilon (90 pairs).
As President Rabinowitz recently said to the students in his
Thanksgiving e-mail, “Let this Thanksgiving be a reminder of all we can do, all
we do already, and what more we can do if we work together.” Thank you to everyone who helped us with this
initiative.
