The night when International Alumni shared their
hardships and success stories
It was Friday night on March 27, 2015 when Sonia Fernandes, Assistant Director from Multicultural
International Student Programs Office (MISPO) conducted the Hofstra
International Alumni Panel workshop. It was the night when our successful
international students returned to Hofstra to share their success stories and
advice with the current international students. The panel was a good
combination of alumni from countries like India, China, South Korea and Germany,
with mixed educational backgrounds like engineering, health services, law, film
making, education and various business majors.
Sonia wonderfully moderated this workshop
and also gave her insights on CPT and OPT to the students. Following the event,
the students also had a chance to speak one-on-one with the alumni. Although
the event was scheduled from 6-8 p.m. but it was so nice of our alums that they
stayed late until 9:30 p.m. chatting with the current students. Everyone really
enjoyed the Chinese buffet dinner which was sponsored by the Zarb Asian Pacific
Student Association (ZAPSA). We would like to thank ZAPSA for co-sponsoring
this event.
Our current international students
utilized this wonderful opportunity to listen to these successful alumni and
learned how they adjusted to living in the United States when they first
arrived and how they overcame with the hardships they faced during their
student life at Hofstra. The panel gave some really useful tips on finding
internships and hence finding full-time jobs upon graduation with H-1 visa
sponsorship.
Last but not least, we would like to
express our thanks to the wonderful panel for being so generous in putting in their
valuable time and making this event a huge success with their presence and
thoughts.
