Club Sports Roundup

Whether lifting bars, jumping bars, waving sticks, or riding brooms, it was certainly a jam-packed weekend for Hofstra Club Sports.

 

The Hofstra Powerlifting Club had their first big competition of the year on Saturday, March 21^st as they traveled to Crossfit Strong Island in Merrick, New York to challenge in the amateur division of the Revolution Powerlifting Syndicate. The club entered two separate competitive teams (one in the morning session, one in the afternoon) and both earned victories over rivals Gaglione Strength, a very reputable Long Island powerlifting gym, as well as a multitude of individual competitors. The morning session team came away with a first place finish and the afternoon side secured second. Individual first place honors were awarded to club members across a range of weight classes; they were: Erin Woodworth, Moriah Garzone, Yu-Hsiang Huang, Zach Brunacini, Taylor Acosta, Nick Bielawa, Miguel Vinny Frazzeto, Miguel Ayala Jr. – who was also named best lifter in his class, and Louis Ban, who set an RPS New York State record for squat and total in his class (pictured below).

The Hofstra Equestrian Club competed in Regionals this past weekend and managed some great rides against tough competition. Starting the day off, Julissa Hoogeveen competed in the Intermediate Flat division and secured a second place ribbon, earning herself a spot in the Zone finals which take place in Pittsford, New York on Saturday, April 4th. Riders Kiersten Berwick and Angela Bottari earned a 7^th and 8^th, respectively, in Novice Fences, and Alie Coolidge and Julianna Foertsch earned the same honors in Novice Flat. In the Walk Trot Center division, riders Charlotte Wood and Lisa Brix were both called back after the heats, and came away with a 4^th and 6^th place ribbon, respectively.

 Hofstra Men’s Rugby Club suffered a frustrating home loss to Montclair State on Sunday, March 22^nd, despite a flying start thanks to the work of captain Jonathon Thompson and Quentin Duprey, who scored just two minutes in to his first start for the team. Hofstra clung on to the lead for the majority of the game, but couldn’t hold off a last minute push from the opposition, who edged the score to 19-17 in the closing minutes. Fortunately for Hofstra Rugby, the women’s team, who also played Montclair State at home, more than rectified the Pride’s stakes in the rivalry, with a monstrous 53 – 0 win. Mackenzie O’Donnell, Alexa Strickland, and Kim Tran scored two tries each; while Rachel Pierre, Katie Coyle, and Emily Burke – former Hofstra Volleyball player and Rugby debutant – registered one try each for the Pride.

The Hofstra Quidditch Club has been busy gearing up for their mid-April trip to the Quidditch World Cup in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and logged an impressive 3-0  record at Rutgers University’s round robin tournament on Sunday, March 22^nd, beating the hosts and two other club teams.

Hofstra Women’s Club Lacrosse made a bright start to match the weather on Sunday, March 22^nd, defeating Sacred Heart University 12-9 at Shuart Stadium. Next up in the round robin was Providence College, who also felt the effects of Pride’s fighting form, and were beaten 15 – 8 by the, boosting Hofstra’s current record to 4-2 for the Spring season. Hofstra Men’s Club Lacrosse were unfortunate not to match the success of their female counterparts, falling to Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart in their afternoon tournament. The women’s club will host NYU at home on Thursday, March 26th and Fordham on Saturday, March 28th, while the men’s team will look to improve on their record the next day as they host UMass and St. John's on Sunday, March 29th.

Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Club teams were both in action this past weekend, and it seems the snow’s denial of practice time has taken its toll. The men’s side lost three of its matchups, despite a promising showing from the freshmen class and a standout performance from Spencer Riggins. The women’s team had a couple of tough losses in Shippensburg, PA, but managed one win against Messiah College on Saturday night, and will look to replicate those winning ways at the Garden State Tournament in Pittsgrove, New Jersey on Saturday, March 28^th. 

Hofstra Billiards Club and Hofstra Rock Climbing Club had successful outings this past weekend (Saturday, March 21^st & Sunday, March 22^nd). Billiards traveled to Baldwin Billiards and Rock Climbing to Brooklyn Boulders. Hofstra Billiards teams Cruchaga and Fecteau both won their nine-ball matches.
