First Fridays: Women's HERstory Month Edition!

Every first Friday of each month, The Office of Student Leadership and Activities tries to bring some fun to Hofstra USA for those staying on campus over the weekend through our programming series conveniently titled “First Fridays!” In the recent past, we have invited students to make cards for our troops overseas, play games with fellow students and learn stress-relieving tips for exams. This semester, our programmers wanted to bring First Fridays to a whole new level, making them bigger and more interactive than ever before. With a lot of hard work, collaboration, and some inspiration due to the start of Women’s History Month, OSLA threw “First Fridays: Women’s HERstory Month Edition” in HofUSA from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on March 1, 2013.

“First Fridays: Women’s HERstory Month Edition ” was a night to kick off the start of Women’s History month in an innovative way, involving free food, giveaways, performances, and student group appearances. We started off the night with an amazing performance by the all-female acapella group, Makin’ Treble, who drew in a big crowd! They sang two songs to fit the theme of the night, and the student audience was calling for an encore.

Throughout the night, some of our most proactive female students clubs were present to supply guests with information about important women in our history. Women of Action and Collegiate Women of Color had everyone talking with their “Binder Full of Women” activity, in which students had to guess which description in their binder matched which famous female photo on their board for a prize!

She’s the First brought a display showing all the work they are doing to help girls get an education, and promoted their upcoming Dance-A-Thon to raise funds toward that goal.

The Hofstra History club had giveaways and a banner for students to sign regarding their favorite women in history.

We had a special guest (well, guests!), the Women’s Basketball team, who gave out FREE tickets to their big game on Sunday and promoted their successful season!

With all of this going on, OSLA also sponsored a “Do You Know Your HERstory?” Quiz for student attendees to fill out in order to be put in the running to win a $50 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods!  We also had poster boards were scattered throughout HofUSA for students to put write down which women in their life most impacts them, and we had some truly inspired responses!

The goal of the night was to give students staying the weekend at Hofstra an event that could get them involved in a fun, new way, while throwing some education in the mix! From this First Friday forward, OSLA wants to make all First Fridays big programs for Hofstra students to really get excited about and make a night out of! We have some great ideas for the future, so check out our Facebook page to see what we’re up to!
