Women's Herstory Month Reception

Women's Herstory Month Reception invites...

She's the First co-founders Tammy Tibbetts & Christen Brandt

Sonia Fernandes, the Assistant Director from the Multicultural & International Student Programs Office (MISPO) welcomed everyone to the reception that is celebrating the amazing not-for-profit She's the First that sponsor girls' education in the developing world by helping them be the first girl in their family to go to school and graduate from high school and then go to college. She's the First believes the "best way to fight poverty and extremism is to educate and empower women and girls."

Women and girls that attend school and graduate from high school and college are more likely to marry later in life and have smaller and healthier families. They are more likely to find jobs and earn money to support their family which they use to pay for healthcare and education needs of their children. Investing in a girl's education has a positive ripple effect that will help reduce poverty for future generations.

Chelsea Tirrell is the president of Hofstra University's chapter of She's the First"If it wasn't for Tammy & Christen I don't know where I would be or what kind of woman I would be. They have changed my life and changed who I thought I would become."

Chelsea went to India in January to visit the the girls they sponsored to go to school. She read a poem written by a 10th grade girl, Preetha, entitled "What do I Believe."

Tammy & Christen asked the audience to think about the reasons that prevent girls from receiving an education. They asked everyone, what are you the first in your family to do...?

Tammy & Christen previewed their new documentary, Mahgo, (means daughter) they filmed in India about the girls they sponsored to go to school.

Thank you Tammy, Christen, Chelsea and the She's the First members. You are a source of inspiration for us all. You embody "be the change you want to see in the world." I hope you have all been inspired to make herstory one woman at a time!!!

Thank you MISPO Team- Excellent Job!!!

  3. Very inspirational action by MISPO. My country is in need of this type of ideas. There may be some NGOs out there, but confined to only names. We (citizens) expect results, or else what is the purpose of existence. P.S. I wonder how organizations get funds to sponsor the girls in need. Hmm... donations may be.
